Rethinking Our Assumptions About AI Development
In October 2024, Meta's chief AI scientist Yann LeCun made a striking declaration that challenges much of the current AI hype cycle: true "human-level AI" may be a decade or more away and achieving it will require fundamentally different approaches than our current systems. At the Hudson Forum, LeCun argued that despite impressive advances in large language models and image generation, today's AI remains fundamentally limited - capable of sophisticated pattern matching but lacking true understanding of the world.
This observation arrives at a crucial moment in AI development. While ChatGPT o1 models capture headlines with their seemingly intelligent outputs, researchers are increasingly highlighting their limitations. More importantly, scholars like Dr. Tiera Tanksley are documenting how increased understanding of AI systems often leads to more critical - rather than more accepting - perspectives on the technology.
These parallel developments raise crucial questions about the future of AI development, the role of critical perspectives, and how we might chart a more ethical path forward.
The Current State: Understanding Our AI's Limitations
To understand where we're going, we need to be clear about where we are. LeCun explains our current AI limitations with striking clarity: today's large language models work by predicting the next token (usually a few letters or a short word), while image/video models predict the next pixel. More advanced AI architectures would likely increase these demands substantially.

You’ve given us much to consider here.
Teaching CRT and exposing biases may be an attempt toward holding a multitude of truths; however, young children look for simple truth:
Where do I belong?
And Who will keep me safe?
Confusion clouds a child’s perspective and causes fear—instinctual fear.
Children co-exist, without care of skin color, or religious tradition, but they still return home at the end of the day.
Birds of a feather still stick together — it’s magnetic, still in our DNA today.
Human beings are born into a meaning making, connected system, and traditions are a part of people’s history that some would rather die for than abandon.
The history of US public education is filled with stories of oppression. Minorities didn’t transition quietly during early assimilation. An example is Native American children taken from their families, and made to sit motionless in desks wearing school uniforms Many ran away, literally, from their schools back home to where they belonged. Some horribly punished, and abused by “the powers that be.”
Might we deem it a righteous act to protect and serve our community, steering our children away from the nightmare of human greed?
Or do we trust programmed AI agents to design a new culture, of one race, benevolent, providing for and protecting the health and material wealth of the human race—for eternity?
Humans simply aren’t wired for that—yet.
